Why are Taxpayers Forced to Pay?
Nationally the U.S. Senate failed to pass the bill that would prevent the use of public funds for organizations that perform abortions. You the taxpayer will once again be robbed of your hard earned dollars that the federal government gives to Planned Parenthood. The same Planned Parenthood of America that is classified as a “non-profit” organization yet reports multi-million dollar profits. [see the chart below] Senator Kelly Ayotte voted to stop taxpayer funding of organizations that perform abortions, while Senator Jeanne Shaheen voted to allow their funding.
Over and above the question on whether it is the policy makers money to give, one must question the lack of diligent accountability by our elected officials when taxpayer provided funds are given to an organization that reports a profit. Additionally the Government Accountability Office audit reported that between 2002-2008 Planned Parenthood spent $657.1 million in federal grants and programs. However, Planned Parenthood reports they received $2.3 billion in federal grants and programs. Why is there this discrepancy? The GAO further indicates that Planned Parenthood receives 72% of its government funding from the federal tax dollars, but Planned Parenthood reports that only 32% of its total income comes from federal sources.
The efforts to stop public funding of organizations providing abortion services are now with the states. New Hampshire passed on the “First in the Nation” opportunity when the bill (HB228) to “prohibiting the department of health and human services from entering into a contract with Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc. or any organization that provides abortion services and prohibiting the use of public funds or insurance for abortion services” has been retained in committee. Instead, in early May, Indiana may be the first in the nation to defund organizations like Planned Parenthood that perform abortions. Kansas Governor Sam Brownback, former Presidential contender, advocating for a similar restriction may lead his state to follow close behind. Beyond the accountability to taxpayers, one must also question what impact the elimination of the millions of lives from our society means. It is often said that one does not operate in a vacuum. Information provided at abortion clinics and most media outlets quickly relate the “quick fix” that an abortion will be. Everything will be alright. But the women and men who aborted their baby will tell you a different story. Those who make up Silent No More, Rachel’s Vineyard, Operation Outcry, Abort73.com, and other post-abortion organizations relate a different story. They talk of depression, pain, regret, and sometimes suicide. The decision to terminate the life within the mother is not a quick fix.
And there is more. Think about the people who were not born. The most valuable asset of our state are the people. If the 25,425,800 babies had been born between 1973 and 1990 instead of surgically aborted, they would be between the ages of 21-38. 25,425,800 employed would earn $587,971,625,000 in earnings. This would add $72,908,481,500 to Social Security and $16,345,611,175 to Medicare. Assuming that half of these babies would now be women of child bearing age, and that they would average one child per woman, we would have approximately 65,681,150 children whose parents would be buying diapers, toys, bottles, clothing and school supplies. 65 million missing people who would be buying houses, cars, earning, saving, spending, investing, teaching, inventing, creating businesses, going to college, and the list goes on.
The question is really, why are we investing our tax dollars in organizations that rob us demographically, but financially? So you decide. Should we keep funding organizations like Planned Parenthood?
It is the largest provider and promoter of Abortion in the US. The most recent annual report for Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) is for PPFA’s 2008 - 2009 Fiscal Year (7/1/08 - 6/30/09). The information is sobering if you believe innocent unborn babies should be protected. (See table on your right.) PPFA released a 3-page fact sheet detailing their activities in 2009:
